It's been great having the kids home this summer. A very nice and unexpected treat after they've both been at college for a couple of years. I really enjoy having them around.

Matt thought it would be nice to do his college reading assignments on the beach today. We spent most of the afternoon at Torrey Pines beach, near the north parking lot. Matt, Jess, and I wanted some shade, so we bought a beach umbrella on the way over. Susan and Scott were quite content in the sun.

I'd rather not walk alone, but if I'm on my own, I want to go someplace scenic and interesting. Fortunately, we have plenty of those places here in San Diego. One of my favorite walks, and one that has plenty of up and down, is the 4-mile beach trail loop at Torrey Pines. This is the low point of the walk, just above Flat Rock. I could go down to the beach from here, but I usually head back up, because I've parked on top and the alternate walk back from the beach is along a road instead of a trail. I didn't stick around for the sunset, but it looks like a perfect "green flash" evening with the crystal clear horizon in the background.

We had patriotic red, white, and blue fruit salad today in celebration of Independence Day. The red is strawberries, blue is blueberries, and white is Korean melons. It's been a good day. I woke up to Le Tour de France and Wimbledon, switch back and forth between the time trial and the Williams sisters. It was nice to see Lance finish in the top 10. Seems he was being a bit too careful on the descent, and that he'll get up more nerve when he's in the mountains. Susan's dad came over in the early afternoon. It was a beautiful day outside. We played ping pong and horseshoes, then sat down for a couple of games of Taboo. Later, it was video games and more ping pong in the nicely cleaned out garage. We'll probably watch a Netflix movie later tonight.
